E.P. Clare (Emma) is a painter working in oils, acrylic and ink. A main focus is portraiture and her delight in this art form comes from the shapes and colours found in the human face, and the ever-changing relationship between picture, subject and viewer.
Her work has won prizes in group exhibitions in Dubai, been exhibited in London as part of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition and progressed to the second round of judging in the BP Portrait Award in the UK.
Her painting approach for portraits involves creating a detailed underpainting on a surface previously prepared with an Alizarin Crimson and Raw Umber wash. Once this underpainting, using only Raw Umber and Titanium White, is finished, layers of colour are placed on top, sometimes thickly, sometimes more transparently, allowing multiple hues to show through. Emma uses a limited palette of high-quality fine art oils.
Emma’s abstract life work springs from intensive artistic retreats in France and the UAE, working with life models trained in theatrical dance. The process of creating these pictures is profound, releasing intense emotion and energy, both of which make their clear marks on the paper.
Emma’s artistic emergence has been a journey inspired by the brilliant artists she has encountered along the way. She paints for the love of it and sells original pieces, fine art limited edition giclee prints and also does private commissions.

June 2023 - Warwickshire Open Studios again, with brother Lawrence again. Lots of great conversations with people new and old and exciting to show work from last summer's French retreat.
January 2023 - I became a member of the Leamington Studio Artists - a fab collective of local artists who, together, run two galleries in Leamington. We have curated members exhibitions every month, with lots of opportunity to meet people at the opening nights and when volunteering on shifts - a really great enterprise.

2020 - Well, what to say? I hope you are all OK in these difficult and strange strange times. Art has been a good friend over the past few months. And it's been a great privilege to contribute to Tom Croft's portrait for NHS heroes initiative and to paint Jean.
Summer 2019 - contemplating a return to the UK after 25 years, looking forward to the new colours of life there after sun and desert for many years.
2018 - happily busy with private commissions, plus working on 'The Bell Ringer' series.
