 Joy Viegas

1934-2015

Joy Viegas, an English artist, drew much of her inspiration from the warmer countries of Europe in which she spent many years of her life. The colours, shapes and shadows found in Greece, Portugal, Italy and Spain appear throughout her work. A lover of southern England, she also incorporated elements of the rugged Cornish coast into her abstract images.

Joy worked mainly on canvas, silk and paper using a variety of mediums, from oils to batik. Her artistic interests also included pottery, stained glass, mosaic and jewellery.

Her work is distinguished by imaginative juxtaposition of color, light and shade, invoking the mystery and romance of solitude.

Joy is greatly missed.
